Pre-Calculus A

  • Duration: Semester
  • Credits: 0.00

Course Overview

Precalculus A is the first course in a two-part sequence designed to prepare students for advanced mathematics, including Precalculus B and Calculus. This course builds on foundational algebra concepts and emphasizes a deeper exploration of functions and their applications. Students develop the skills to analyze and interpret a wide range of functions while making meaningful connections between mathematical theory and real-world applications.

Key Learning Focus

Students will:

  • Review and strengthen fundamental algebraic concepts as the basis for advanced study.
  • Explore polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, logarithmic, and piecewise functions.
  • Investigate the behavior of quadratics through an introduction to conic sections.
  • Study sequences and series, recognizing patterns and developing general rules.
  • Apply mathematical reasoning to real-world scenarios, strengthening critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Instructional Approach

Precalculus A emphasizes conceptual understanding alongside procedural fluency. Through problem-solving exercises, projects, and real-world applications, students will:

  • Develop strong analytical reasoning skills.
  • Make connections across different areas of mathematics.
  • Build confidence in applying mathematics to practical and professional contexts.

Academic Alignment

This course is aligned with state and national mathematics standards and is part of the 9–12 Mathematics Program. It is typically taken prior to Precalculus B and serves as preparation for Calculus and other advanced mathematics courses.

Outcome

By the end of Precalculus A, students will have developed the mathematical foundation and reasoning skills necessary for advanced study in mathematics. They will be well-prepared for Precalculus B, college-level mathematics, and career pathways in fields such as engineering, computer science, finance, and data analysis.
