Course Overview

Basic Reading strengthens foundational reading skills for middle school learners who need additional support in comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. Students practice reading strategies that help them understand informational and literary texts, build confidence, and develop the habits of effective readers.

Key Learning Focus

• Strengthen decoding, fluency, and foundational comprehension skills.
• Use reading strategies such as predicting, questioning, summarizing, and clarifying.
• Build vocabulary through context clues, word analysis, and academic language.
• Practice reading grade-level–appropriate fiction, nonfiction, and functional texts.
• Improve stamina and confidence as independent readers.

Instructional Approach

Instruction includes guided reading, modeled strategies, structured practice, and interactive discussions. Students use graphic organizers and reading tools to support understanding.

Outcomes

By the end of MS: English – Basic Reading (M), students will:

• Demonstrate improved comprehension of a variety of texts.
• Apply foundational reading strategies independently.
