Course Overview
Honors Biology A is an accelerated high school course that provides a rigorous introduction to the study of life and the natural world. Building on foundational science knowledge, the course explores cell biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, and the biochemistry of respiration and photosynthesis. With an emphasis on scientific reasoning and critical thinking, students investigate biological principles, examine how living things are both diverse and unified, and evaluate the interconnected systems that sustain life on Earth.
Key Learning Focus
Instructional Approach
Honors Biology A uses a hands-on, inquiry-driven approach that challenges students to think critically and apply scientific methods. Instruction includes laboratory investigations, fieldwork, virtual simulations, and project-based learning. Students design and conduct experiments, gather and analyze data, and present findings to peers, developing scientific communication and problem-solving skills. Assignments often extend beyond the classroom, encouraging independent study, group collaboration, and the integration of real-world applications.
Academic Alignment and Progression
This course aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and state and national benchmarks. Honors Biology A is the first part of a two-course sequence, followed by Honors Biology B, and provides a strong foundation for AP Biology, dual-enrollment courses, and college-level biology studies. It also connects to STEM career pathways in medicine, genetics, environmental science, biotechnology, and research.
Outcomes
By the end of Honors Biology A, students will:
Note: As an honors course, Honors Biology A operates at an accelerated pace and requires a high level of initiative, responsibility, and commitment. Students are expected to complete extensive laboratory work, independent reading, and advanced assignments appropriate for college preparation.
