Course Overview
English 12 A is the first semester of the senior-level Language Arts sequence, designed to provide students with a rigorous and enriching study of English literature and language. The course emphasizes critical reading, analytical writing, and mastery of Standard English conventions. A strong focus is placed on constructing well-reasoned arguments and producing polished written and oral communication.
Key Learning Focus
Instructional Approach
Instruction in English 12 A blends teacher-led lessons, peer-model demonstrations, and interactive, technology-based learning. Students engage in project-based assignments such as literary analysis essays, creative writing, debates, and research projects. Emphasis is placed on the full writing process—drafting, revising, editing, and presenting—to ensure accuracy and sophistication in writing. Three modes of instruction guide learning: Narrative (focused on grade-level goals), Peer Model (student-led demonstrations), and 21st Century (real-world application of skills).
Academic Alignment and Progression
Aligned with state and national English Language Arts standards, English 12 A supports Humanities and Social Sciences career clusters while preparing students for college-level English courses. This course also builds readiness for standardized assessments such as the SAT and ACT, as well as future academic and career pathways requiring strong literacy and communication skills. Successful completion of English 12 A prepares students for English 12 B, the final semester of the high school Language Arts sequence.
