Course Overview
English 11 B is the second semester of the junior-level Language Arts sequence, designed to advance students' skills in critical reading, analytical writing, and rhetorical expression. This course emphasizes close study of literature—including novels, poetry, non-fiction, and informational texts—while also refining students' command of composition, grammar, and style. Key Learning Focus
Instructional Approach
Instruction in English 11 B combines teacher-led lessons, peer-model demonstrations, and technology-supported activities. Students participate in project-based learning, including literary analysis, essay writing, debates, research projects, and presentations. Instruction emphasizes the writing process—planning, drafting, revising, and editing—to ensure mastery of grammar, mechanics, and effective style. Three instructional modes support learning: Narrative (focused on grade-level learning goals), Peer Model (student-led demonstrations), and 21st Century (skills for higher education, careers, and lifelong learning).
Academic Alignment and Progression
English 11 B is aligned with state and national English Language Arts standards and completes the junior-level sequence. Successful completion prepares students for AP English Literature, AP English Language and Composition, and college-level coursework. Beyond academics, the course develops communication, reasoning, and research skills applicable to a wide range of career pathways, including journalism, literature, education, publishing, and law.
