Course Overview
AP Environmental Science B builds on the foundations of Part A, focusing on human interactions with the environment, environmental challenges, and solutions for sustainability. This second-semester course emphasizes applied science and critical evaluation of environmental issues, preparing students for the AP® Environmental Science Exam and further study in environmental science, health sciences, or engineering.
Key Learning Focus
Students will:
- Investigate human land use practices and their ecological consequences.
- Analyze the effects of pollution on air, water, and soil systems.
- Study biodiversity loss and conservation strategies, evaluating human roles in ecological change.
- Explore concepts of sustainability, climate change, and environmental policy at local, national, and global levels.
- Conduct laboratory and field-based investigations to design and test environmentally sound practices.
Instructional Approach
Students engage in labs, simulations, field studies, and case-based projects that emphasize systems thinking and problem-solving. AP exam practice is embedded throughout the course, with opportunities to apply scientific reasoning to contemporary environmental challenges.
Outcome
By the end of AP Environmental Science B, students will:
- Evaluate human impacts on natural systems and propose evidence-based solutions.
- Apply scientific principles to analyze environmental problems and sustainability strategies.
- Demonstrate mastery of laboratory science skills required by the College Board®.
- Be fully prepared for success on the AP® Environmental Science Exam and for continued study in environmental and health sciences.
