AP Calculus AB A

  • Duration: Semester
  • Credits: 0.00

Course Overview

AP Calculus AB A is the first semester of a rigorous, college-level mathematics course aligned with the College Board AP® Calculus AB framework. Students build a strong foundation in the methods and applications of calculus while developing the problem-solving, analytical, and reasoning skills necessary for success on the AP® exam and in future STEM studies.

Key Learning Focus

Students will:

  • Explore limits and continuity as the groundwork for calculus concepts.
  • Develop a deep understanding of derivatives, including rules and techniques for differentiation.
  • Apply derivative methods to analyze functions, model motion, and solve optimization problems.
  • Interpret results graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally in accordance with AP® standards.
  • Strengthen proficiency using a graphing calculator and other digital tools to solve and represent problems.

Instructional Approach

Instruction integrates multimedia lessons, an online textbook, interactive graphing utilities, and practice assessments modeled after AP® exam questions. Students engage in direct instruction, guided practice, discussions, and portfolio work, reinforcing both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency.

Outcome

By the end of AP Calculus AB A, students will:

  • Demonstrate mastery of limits, continuity, and differential calculus.
  • Apply calculus concepts to real-world contexts and mathematical models.
  • Build the analytical skills required for advanced mathematics and STEM pathways.
  • Be prepared to transition into AP Calculus AB B and continue comprehensive exam preparation.
